Wow! Talk about a blast from the past!.I was from the Falls, so yeah, we had some cheap classics like DADDY's, JP Morgans, The Library, The Tree House, Club Miami, UNC's, BRAGGS, Rockwell's.but.I went to college Medaille. There the fun really began with Park Meadow, Gabels, Hotel California, Rude Boys and of course the immortal Cassidy's on Main. If you were there, you were there.and you can think back, and smile.(but don't try to hip anybody born after the mid 50's to it, because it's just too far beyond the realm of possabilty for them.bless their well trained consumerist souls) Smile at the times you and your buddies used to laugh your ass off gettn BUFFALOED IN BUFFALO! Here's to the loving memory of several million missing brain cells.you did not die in vain. Seems the underlying thread in all these postings is the huge amount of great LIVE music in and around Buffalo. Later, I worked for Bobby as DJ/bartender at The Outside Inn in Angola. I was DJ there for a few years back in 70's.
In summer, they were up in your hood (Crystal Beach), in winter, you were in theirs.Allentown! There were always Buffalo friends to hang out with. Plus, there were never any hassles because you knew so many people. That is how we cut our teeth and learned to hang. If ya sorta looked 18 and had the price of a beer, and you didn't clown like a goofball, you were cool.ya had a Rolling Rock in your hand no problem. We already were quite familiar with Buffalo,(spending childhood goin back and forth across river all the time with our folks) so it was no big deal. Feel very lucky to been able to go what I consider the Golden Age of Club land in Houston.Oh man, seeing these posts is really bringing back a flood of great memories! Being from Fort Erie (Canada drinking age 21), we would side step that little hurdle by mearly drivin over a bridge. You also listed Avalon, If I remember, didn't they have a crazy age limit for entrance like 24+ older only? Strange. What was the previous name of club Red Square on Louisiana? That place was cool, very urban and industrial similar to Power Tools.
50 cent well drinks and we just turned legal age. As kids we were too young to experience the disco craze in a club setting back in the 70's and it was new and fresh to us. Remember when I believe Decadance (old theatre on Westheimer) would play Dangerous Disco on Sunday nights? Totally awesome before the retro-disco got played out. Ocean Club, Xcess/Sharkdance (can't remember which came first) and Lizard Lounge (the old one!) soon followed. Started going every Friday and Saturday regularly. Allowed 18+ entry (remember the wristbands? Trying to pull them off and hand them to your underage buddy, lol.) when co-workers took me first time and I was hooked. Club 6400 was the top of the food chain, IMO. I moved into the neighborhood right behind it and walked up there and home, wasted, too many times to count.
Hitch Hikers moved about a block and became Hot Shots. This worked out pretty nice when I managed to miss the bus and had to walk home from school just slip in, drop a couple quarters on the counter, hide in the arcade, and pick up a cold one when the bartender wasn't looking. There was a place on Westheimer near Dairy Ashford called Hitch Hikers that had 50-cent beers on some random weekday afternoon. Pool Halls were my big thing, and Slick Willie's just cost too much. There, I personally consumed 2.4% of the world's beer supply. Haven't read the whole thread, but I'm sure that place on Richmond at 610 has been mentioned, the 3-clubs in one, was it called Wild West?Īl's Sports Bar out Westheimer (a mile + Hwy 6) was originally "Al's #2" the first was on Dairy Ashford near Westpark Road, long before the Westpark Tollway was even an idea. anyone remember the places across the street, "Mausoleum" and some pizza place? I'd wager "Roxy" is still around, although it was just too loud and trendy for me. Numbers I'm sure is still around it was well established by the time I was old enough to drive and I'm an old fart. Surf-Side Sally's, Westheimer Gessner was the shiz-nit, 'til it became "8-Mile" and however many Ghetto places. Polly-Esthers (?) on Dairy Ashford was a fairly regular hangout while it was there (and half a mile from home, at the time). Wowzers!! Sure begs for a long-winded answer.
